ART IS THE BEST THERAPY
Gary Melquist was a survivor, he had a diagnosis of manic depression. He lived with the trials of misdiagnosis and harmful treatments. But his journey through mental illness provided him with a positive outlook on life.
Gary lived in Minneapolis all of his life. He traveled often to Northfield to visit his sister, Paula Case. “Due to my recent diagnoses of cancer I told my sister I won’t be at FiftyNorth’s art exhibit in May. Paula reassured me my art display will advocate for others struggling through the highs and lows of manic depression.” Gary’s age at the time of his death was 79 (DOD 3-9-2026).
The pictures in his display represent the many places he visited. His art was a reminder to himself and others of the potential that lies within everyone; especially those with a mental disorder.
When you see a bright color sunset that is Gary sending a splash of color to us all. Thank You to FiftyNorth for honoring Mental Health Awareness Month.

Kaleidoscope
Artist Statement
Luckily, I have led a multi-faceted life which is reflected in the art I’ve made over five decades. Exploring a number of recurring themes in more than one medium and style has kept me challenged.
The subject matter varies: natural objects, the dress as visual metaphor, the human body, landscapes. I have used painting, fiber art, cast paper sculptures, and one-of-a-kind books. It all goes into making a kaleidoscopic display. I aim to capture the underlying energy inherent in all things, animate and inanimate.
My work has been exhibited in solo and group shows in the USA, Europe and Asia. I have an MFA from the University of MN. I’ve taught a fair amount; my students have ranged from age 8 to 80. I am grateful for having had a long life enriched by art.
